The Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) commenced in Victoria on July 1, allowing novice motorcyclists to ride machines with a power-to-weight ratio of up 150kW per tonne, and with a capacity ceiling of 660cc.
Korean manufacturer Hyosung is at the forefront of LAMS, with its 11-strong line-up of motorcycles (cruisers, sports and naked) and scooters all meeting the new guidelines.
Hyosung’s 250s and scooters automatically fall under the umbrella, but the real bonus is that the company’s stable of four 650s are also available in LAMS configuration, providing customers with a greater variety of choices appropriate to their level of experience and size. And when riders gain their full licence, the 650s can be de-restricted and ridden as full-power models.
“This is great news for Victoria consumers,” said Mark Fattore, the Marketing Manager of Hyosung Australia. “The LAMS scheme has been a huge success in other states and territories, because it just makes so much sense on a number of levels.
“Hyosung has been a big supporter of LAMS since its inception, and we look forward to opening up motorcycling to a new generation of buyers who may not have found what they wanted under the old scheme, where learners could not ride anything above 250cc.
“Mind you, Hyosung still has some great 250cc machinery for learners who still want to go down that path, including the slick GT250R, which was Australia’s biggest-selling 250cc road bike in 2007.”
The LAMS scheme is already in place in South Australia, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania.
